Moulded rubber

Customised rubber components for Nordic industry

What is moulded rubber - and why is it a smart choice?

Rubber offers fantastic design possibilities. The elasticity of the material offers great opportunities for special shapes and angles with properties that meet tough requirements in terms of physical and chemical impact.

🌿 Natural rubber

Natural rubber comes from the sap (latex) of the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis. It is a naturally elastic material that is highly stretchable, durable and biodegradable. It is used in products such as tyres, rubber bands and gloves.

Natural rubber - Benefits:

  • High elasticity and flexibility - very stretchable without cracking.
  • Good wear resistance - withstands abrasion well.
  • Biodegradable - more environmentally friendly than many synthetic alternatives.
  • Good grip and friction - used in e.g. tyres and gloves.

🧪 Synthetic rubber varieties

Synthetic rubbers are man-made materials made from oil-based chemicals. There are many different types, such as:

Synthetic rubber - Advantages:

  • Chemical and oil resistant - withstands substances that natural rubber cannot.
  • Temperature resistant - some varieties cope better with extreme temperatures.
  • More consistent quality - industrially produced, providing better control of properties.
  • Cheaper and more accessible - does not require natural resources from plants.

The process

Ulinco moulded rubber: how it works

  • 1. requirements specification & concept

    • Requirements gathering: Understand and document the specific requirements of the component, including mechanical, chemical and environmental properties.
    • Concept development: Create initial concepts and design ideas based on the requirements specification.
  • 2. choice of materials

    • Material analysis: Analyse and select the right type of rubber, silicone or PU based on the specified requirements.
    • Additives: Decide which additives to use to achieve the desired properties.
  • 3. design & construction

    • CAD modelling: Create detailed CAD models of the component.
    • Simulation: Use simulations to predict how the component will behave under different conditions (load, temperature, chemical exposure).
  • 4. prototyping

    • Prototyping: Producing one or more prototypes of the rubber component to test the design.
    • Testing & validation: of the prototypes to ensure that they fulfil all requirements and specifications.
  • 5. documentation

    • Ensuring the quality of the material: customer requirements and suggestion of a suitable standard to link the material to.
    • Quality/production: PPAP, outturn samples, batch tests, etc.
    • Legal requirements: REACH, RoHS, conflict materials, etc.
  • 6. Tool making

    • Mould design: Design and manufacture mould tools to be used for mass production of the rubber component.
    • Mould making: creating the moulds, usually by CNC machining or other precision machining.
  • 7. quality control

    • Inspection: Conduct thorough inspections to ensure that each component meets quality standards.
    • Testing: possibly perform additional tests, if necessary, to verify the functioning of the components.
  • 8. production and distribution

    • Mass production: Mass production based on validated processes and quality control standards.
    • Packaging: Pack the components in a desirable way.
    • Distribution: Distribute the finished rubber components to the customer.

Typical uses of moulded rubber

In industry, moulded rubber is used in many different applications where high precision, strong durability and reliable performance are required.

Gaskets and seals

Moulded rubber is ideal for gaskets and seals that need to withstand different environments, chemicals and temperatures.

Dampers and vibration protection

Ulinco manufactures both customised dampers and has one of the largest standard ranges on the market. Applications can be vibration protection to reduce noise, shaking and wear in machines and installations.

Protection and enclosures

Moulded rubber is often used as protectors and enclosures to protect sensitive components from things like moisture, dust and impact.

Specialised components

We manufacture customised rubber components for demanding environments, such as the automotive, offshore and electronics industries.
